How One Injection A Week Can Help You Decrease Your Body Mass Index

The uphill struggle to get to a healthy weight can become unbearable for many people. Multiple things contribute to weight gain, including thyroid problems, a naturally low metabolism, an unhealthy diet, and lack of physical activity.

While making small changes such as eating healthily and getting the recommended exercise each week can help, many people find that busy lives and hectic work schedules mean there aren’t enough hours in the day to lose weight effectively.

Well, Wegovy, a new chronic weight management tool, could be the answer you’re looking for. These weekly injections generated massive buzz in the medical and health industries because they offer a convenient way to drop those excess pounds.

The medication has made big waves in the USA, and it’s set to make its UK debut towards the middle of 2022. Here’s everything you need to know about these injections that many are hailing a ‘miracle cure’.

FDA Approved

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a new weight loss medication approved for use in adults with obesity or overweight level BMI. The body mass index (BMI) scale determines how a person’s weight corresponds to their height and age.

A healthy BMI can be anything from 18.5 to 25, and individuals at the 25 to 29 mark are often considered overweight. When that score goes above 29, a person is classified as obese – which is why Wegovy is usually only available for people with an initial body max index of at least 30.

The medicine contains the active ingredient, semaglutide – which is also used as a diabetes type 2 treatment.

What we Do

How Does Wegovy Help People With Chronic Weight Management Problems?

Semaglutide is a GLP 1 receptor agonist that regulates the hormones that control appetite and hunger signals. As Wegovy can decrease feelings of hunger and cravings, it can help people reduce their food intake without feeling the effects of dieting.

While the medication can be highly effective, you should combine it with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to lose weight.

As the dose increases each month, people will have more control over their body weight and have fewer cravings for high sugar foods – the main culprit of weight gain!

There are plenty of over the counter drugs that claim to facilitate weight loss, but the reality is that they don’t work. In fact, very few studies suggest that herbal supplements have any real benefit for weight loss.

However, semaglutide containing products regulate hormones, making them a more sustainable solution for effective weight loss. The beneficial new treatment option doesn’t have the horrific side effects of Orlistat, and it’s also a lot more convenient than Saxenda.

Who Can Take Wegovy?

While the general rules state that people must have a body mass index of at least 30, there are some exceptions. Individuals with weight-related comorbidity such as type 2 diabetes, arthritis and sleep apnea might be eligible for the treatment.

As with most medications, there are some side effects, and patients with a personal or family history of thyroid tumours or cancer (medullary thyroid carcinoma MTC) shouldn’t take the medication. You should also avoid Wegovy if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome.

Will Wegovy Help People To Lose Weight?

Wegovy had to go through numerous clinical trials before being recommended by the National Institute For Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and it will be available later this year.

During one study, the participants taking Wegovy lost around 15% of their initial body weight compared to individuals in the placebo group, which lost an average of 2.5% of their initial body mass index.

Using Wegovy Injections

You give yourself a Wegovy injection once a week, and it doesn’t matter what time you do it, as long as you maintain a regular schedule. The pens are easy to use and very similar to Saxenda or other forms of injectable medications.

Preparing The Area

Before you start, it’s important to check if the liquid is clear, as cloudy liquid might not be effective. You’ll also need to think about where you’d prefer to inject the medication, with the choice of the tummy (not near the belly button), upper arm or the thighs.

There’s no right or wrong answer to this, but it’s important to cycle the injection site each week to prevent bruising or pain. It would be best if you also tried to avoid injecting near stretch marks or scars as it could cause future complications.

You should also avoid using the medication if you have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome. Although there is a potential link to thyroid cancer, Wegovy is suitable for most people.

Administering The Semaglutide Injection

Once you prepare your skin, all you have to do is press the device against your skin and click the button. In the window of your injection, you’ll notice a yellow bar. You’ll hear one click to indicate the injection is in process, and you should either wait for at least 10 seconds after you hear a second click or until the yellow bar disappears.

You should also avoid using the medication if you have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome. Although there is a potential link to thyroid cancer, Wegovy is suitable for most people.

Maintaining A Proper Dose Schedule

For Wegovy to work effectively, you must maintain a proper dosage schedule and guidance. Everyone taking the medication will begin on a starting dose of 0.25mg semaglutide. The rate will increase each month until reaching the advised maintenance dose of a semaglutide injection 2.4 mg.

You’ll be able to maintain your schedule, as each dosage has a designated colour, including:

  • Green Pen – 0.25mg

  • Pink Pen – 0.5mg

  • Hazel/Brown Pen – 1.0mg

  • Blue Pen – 1.7mg

  • Black Pen – 2.4mg

The dosing schedule is in place to minimise the potential side effects of Wegovy, but some people might need to maintain a lower dose for longer. The maintenance dose of 2.4mg might be too intense for some people, and healthcare professionals might recommend using a lower amount to reduce the potential gastric side effects.
