Wegovy Supply

The NICE-recommended medication that promises safe and sustainable weight loss will soon become available. Here’s what you need to know.

The battle with obesity is a genuine problem in the UK, and the convenience of fast food and ready meals means that many people fall victim to weight gain. According to statistics from the UK government, 30% of adults aged 35-44 and 33% aged 45-54 are obese.

While many weight loss products are available, most are over-the-counter herbal remedies that rarely work. Orlistat and Saxenda are the only medically approved obesity treatments, but Wegovy will soon become available.

The game-changing medication allows eligible patients to lose body fat and reduce their risk of weight-related medical problems. It’s more convenient than Saxenda, and studies show Wegovy is a highly effective obesity treatment.

If you meet the prescribing criteria and struggle to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, Wegovy could be the perfect treatment for your needs.

Here’s everything you need to know about the medication.

    What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is an injectable medication containing the active ingredient Semaglutide (a medication that helps to control blood sugar levels in people with diabetes). It belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which work by increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas.

Its primary use is for adults with type 2 diabetes who cannot control their blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone. However, semaglutide also can restrict the appetite, facilitating effective weight loss.

Due to its weight loss properties, semaglutide is now available for people who are obese or overweight with an underlying medical condition.

The game-changing drug, Wegovy, could change the way people live, giving them everything they need to reduce their calorie intake and get back to a healthy weight.

    How Wegovy works

Wegovy is highly effective at regulating your appetite because semaglutide replicates a hormone that reduces hunger. Once you reach the optimum dose of a semaglutide injection (2.4 mg), you’ll feel less hungry and be able to stick to a reduced-calorie meal plan.

It’s important to remember that Wegovy itself won’t make you magically lose weight, but many people who struggle to diet note that the constant hunger and cravings for sugary foods halt their efforts (Time).

However, when you stick to the dosage plan, you’re more likely to succeed and see better results from a healthier diet and increased physical activity.

    Taking Wegovy

Wegovy is available in injectable pens that are easy to use and come in various strengths. You’ll start with a low dose and gradually increase it every month until you reach the optimum weight loss level.

    Month 1: 0.25 mg
    Month 2: 0.50 mg
    Month 3: 1 mg
    Month 4: 1.7 mg
    Month 5: 2.4 mg

While you need to inject yourself daily with Saxenda, Wegovy only requires a once-weekly injection, making it an excellent option for people who aren’t keen on needles.

      Who’s eligible for Wegovy?

If you’re interested in Wegovy and meet the prescribing criteria, you can ask your healthcare provider to prescribe the medication.

You must have a BMI of at least 30 and be classed as obese before you can use Wegovy; there are some exceptions for people with lower BMIs that coincide with certain health conditions.

      They include:

      • Gallbladder problems
      • Asthma
      • Sleep Apnoea
      • Osteoarthritis
      • Heart Problems

There’s no guarantee that you’ll have access to Wegovy with the above weight-related medical problems, but sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis, and heart problems can improve when a person loses weight. There’s a good chance your GP will prescribe the medication if it can benefit your health.

      Wegovy versus other prescription drugs

There are only three prescription drugs for weight loss in the UK, and you should always go through a reputable online chemist or your GP if you want to access them. Other legal chronic weight management drugs include Saxenda and Orlistat, but which is better?

      Potential weight loss

To understand which medication is best for your needs, we need to look at how much excess weight you can lose with each medication.

Orlistat: 5 lbs to 10 lbs

      Saxenda: 5% of body weight

      Wegovy: 14.9% of body weight

As you can see, Wegovy offers the most weight loss, and many people in the USA choose it as a treatment option because they want to lose weight effectively.

      Side effects

All medications have side effects, and Wegovy is no different, but for patients struggling with excess weight, having to deal with a restricted meal plan, more exercise, and extreme side effects would be enough to put them off.

Let’s look at the worst side effects of each medication type.

Yes, Orlistat is one of those medications people avoid due to its adverse effects on the body. Its job is to bind excess fat and send it out of your body so you don’t consume as many harmful calories.

While this seems simple, the fact is that most people taking Orlistat get some embarrassing side effects. The most common is the need to defecate more frequently and struggle to get to the toilet.

Orlistat isn’t the most convenient medication, and if you can’t stay at home all day, it’s best to find another solution.

Saxenda’s side effects aren’t nearly as bad, and in most cases, the symptoms will subside once your body gets used to the medicine. They include:

      • Changes in bowel habits
      • Feeling tired
      • Stomach pain
      • Dizzy spells
      • Nausea and sickness

Some people might also have an allergic reaction to the injection, and the side effects can be more extreme because you have to inject yourself every day.

Wegovy and Saxenda have similar side effects, and you might notice some bloating, stomach pain and nausea. These effects occur in around one out of ten people but will disappear as you move through the dose strengths.

Once you reach your maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, you should be able to continue taking the medication without any effects.

        Don’t take Wegovy if you:

        • Have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (this includes family members too)

        • Suffer from pancreas and liver conditions

        • Have heart failure

        • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

        • Have an endocrine condition

        • Are over 75

People with the above conditions should avoid Wegovy, as it can worsen their symptoms or result in an increased risk of developing thyroid tumours.

When is the obesity drug Wegovy available?

While Wegovy is approved for use, it’s not yet available in the UK. However, at the beginning of 2022, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended Wegovy as a weight loss drug, cementing its future as a chronic weight management medication.

Despite the recommendation, Wegovy supply is not yet available in the UK, but it will likely be by the end of 2022.

Further recommendations from NICE include Wegovy being prescribed for a maximum of two years. Patients struggling with their weight must go through their healthcare provider or a regulated pharmacy that offers specialist weight management solutions.

Other semaglutide-containing products are available, but they’re specifically for diabetic patients and won’t have the same medicinal benefits as Wegovy.

        How to access Wegovy

The medication is manufactured by Novo Nordisk, and numerous factors might impact the Wegovy supply chain. As many people are waiting for this medication to become available officially, there will likely be shortages during the initial rollout.

However, this ultimately depends on the companies manufacturing capacity, and as it seems that Wegovy will be a highly popular medication, the supply should stabilise relatively quickly.

The medication will be highly regulated to prevent individuals that don’t meet the criteria or vulnerable groups such as those with eating disorders won’t be able to buy Wegovy.

Healthcare providers and regulated online pharmacies will be instrumental in ensuring the right people receive Wegovy and successfully overcome their struggle with obesity.

        Wegovy and the NHS

A big question people have is whether they’ll be able to get Wegovy on the NHS. If you meet the prescribing criteria and your doctor feels that Wegovy might benefit your weight loss journey, you’ll be able to get a prescription.

As the medication is expensive, people most in need of the injections will probably take priority. The good news is regulated pharmacies will be able to prescribe it too, and while this will come at an extra cost, you’ll still be able to access Wegovy (if you meet the criteria).

While new prescriptions are yet to be issued, keeping up to date with the latest developments is essential because there will be considerable demand for Wegovy when it finally becomes available.
